The US rollout of Google's 'AI Overviews' search feature has left many SEOs and bloggers wondering if it's finally time to give up.

We're living through yet another of those "SEO is dead" moments.

Sigh.💀

AI Overviews is the new name for Google's search generative experience (SGE).

Here, it uses AI to surface content directly in the search results instead of links to websites.

Basically, Google is taking content from your blog and using it to answer search queries.

But without sending you any traffic.

Damn!

So, is the game finally up?

I'm confident that it isn't.

Here's why:

The AI Overviews feature generally only works with simple search queries.

The kind where there's a definitive answer to the question.

The kind that don't call for much nuance.

If that's your focus, then yes, you're going to lose traffic.

But (and this is where I'm confident), AI Overviews still can't deliver satisfactory answers for search queries full of nuance.

Such as:

• Those that call for specific expertise in a niche topic, to solve complex, ever-evolving problems.
• Those where readers want to learn from another human's first-hand experience.
• Those where topic freshness is paramount.
• And those where opinion lies at the heart of search intent.

If your blog falls into any of these categories, I think you'll weather the storm of AI Overviews.

(Just as we did with Featured Snippets).

There's a big positive side here as well.

AI Overviews will likely kill off low quality sites catering to basic queries (read: junk).

That leaves plenty of room for genuine experts to showcase their knowledge and build a solid brand online.

One that goes beyond organic traffic to construct an online brand universe across multiple platforms (using AI to take the strain).
